Materials:
Assessment:
Students will independently create an acrostic poem. They will be describing what was happening in at least two of the pictures from the Progressive Era.

Description of Activity:
- The teacher will hand a picture to each student. Some pictures will be from the Progressive Era showing child labor, and some pictures will be from today’s society doing chores. The teacher should print all pictures in black and white to make sure that is not a deciding factor when the class is looking at the pictures. Each student will independently determine if the picture represents a student working in today’s society or a student working during the Progressive Era. Each student will show their picture to the whole class on the elmo. The student would have to share with the class if they thought the picture was from the Progressive Era or today and why. The class will then have a discussion about if they agree or disagree with the presenter and why. As a class, the students and teachers will talk about the pictures by describing what is happening as far as what the children are doing and what the environment around the children looks like. After the class has decided if the picture is from the Progressive Era or today, the students will put it in one pile for what category it falls under. Students will then choose two pictures to write an acrostic poem about the pictures from the Progressive Era. They will describe what the children are doing and what the environment around them.

-At the end, the teacher will share what child labor is and is not. There is a link above that provides definitions. I would recommend writing them on a poster board, so that students can refer back to them throughout the unit. The students can also add additional thoughts that they formulated about what is and isn’t child labor onto the poster. Tell the students that we will be looking more into this next time.
