Overview

  • Supporting Questions:
    • How do the different regulations of Child Labor during the Progressive Era relate to the demographics of different states?
  • Standards:
    • SS.4.16. Describe how environmental and cultural characteristics influence population distribution in specific places or regions.
    • SS.4.22. Develop a claim about the past and cite evidence to support it.
  • Objectives:
    • After looking at maps showing the distribution of ages and grades of children that work in child labor, students will be able to explain at least one reason why two different states have different age requirements for child labor (SS.4.16).
    • After looking at maps and having a class discussion, students will be able to cite at least two maps to answer how the demographic of a specific state influenced the age requirements for child labor (SS.4.22).
This lesson can be completed over the course of two days. The children will be expected to participate in a discussion, and do some research on the computer. It might be a good idea to spend a day discussing the content and culture. Then the students could use the next day to work on research for the assignment.
